Forum: GratefulDead Subject: When do the boys mess up?

On my neverending quest to find out all the different things that make each show special & unique.....

Can you tell some shows when the boys mess up a song so bad that they start all over? Or some shows when they mess up the lyrics?

Thanks guys! =)

Our missing forum brother ashesrising (if you're reading this ashes, greetings to you - I hope you're well) flagged up a great moment in a post a few months ago. At MIT 5-6-70 towards the end of the show the band are playing St Stephen when suddenly everyone except Jerry swings too early into Not Fade Away. Jerry insistently plays the St Stephen riff over the top of their NFA and by sheer force of personality drags them back into line to finish St Stephen. It's really well worth a listen.

Every time they played It Must Have Been the Roses, Bob sings "it must have been" while Jerry belts out "maybe it was" (or vice versa).

I never did walk out over the error though, and they always did seem to come together for the "the roses".

There's an electric "Ripple " from the Capitol Theater (Port Chester NY) run (sorry, I can't recall exactly which night) in February of 1971 where they start the song, then stop, at which point Garcia says something about them being out of tune and needing to tune up.

Hey DB..

Sorry i can't be more specific w/a date but there is a Brokedown Palace out there that breaks down (sorry) in the first verse, and after some good natured self-effacement the boys just put the brakes on and start it all over again.

I think it might be a late 70's version but someone else here would have a better idea of exactly where and when.

7/2/85 Pittsburgh was one time when that happened with Brokedown. Jerry started the song with the wrong lyric, totally stopped and then said something to the effect of "That's not right" and then started over.

shows when they mess up the lyrics... just about any truckin'! :P Well.. seems to me like in the 80's garcia just started flubbing them all over the place (i dont mind though.. adds character to the song in my opinion).. but I hear sometimes about the "worst shows" they ever did, and that at one point, in a jack straw, everyone was doing something different, and it was just chaos

oh and hi DB =)

The one that sticks in my mind ended up as a tribute to Brent and that was the botched final Gimme Some Lovin. (MSG-1990)

Another one that was not as dramatic was during the Dylan -Dead tour at JFK -Philly. I believe it was during Masters of War and Dylan did not like what he was hearing and shut the tune down as abruptly as pulling a needle off a phonograph in mid song.

When don't they mess up lol. There's a lot to remember musically and lyrically when you've got that many songs going on and when you change them night after night. A great early screwup is the St. Stephen from 4-28-71 captured superbly on the Fillmore East set. After the middle jam, they start into the "St. Stephen will remain," and I think it's Bobby who comes in a with "Did he doubt." You can hear the chuckle from Garcia as they pull back into the verse--so what if he screwed up--we're on fire! Classic Dead, smiling at mistakes. "Did it matter, does it now" sums the whole thing up.

Sorry no date (calling Strat)but think it was Philly, Throwing Stones, going way too fast for about 3 lines and the band just shuts down. Bobby calmly says lets try that one again.

the grand daddy is Telluride as indicated by others Aug 1987. Still brings a smile to my face. Also, for a laugh check out the PPV summer solstice show in June 1989 at Shoreline. With a TV audience watching Weir's amp blows up during the first tune

And Weir kicks the shit out of it, prompting Jerry to say the audience, "Now we're really havin' FUN!"

Could someone give the date of the Telluride Brokedown Palace encore fiasco? Hands down, the funniest Grateful Dead mistake I've ever heard.
